Two Helen Steiner Rice students are Young Authors winners

Two Helen Steiner Rice Elementary School students are proud new owners of trophies now that they are among the winners of the 2023-24 Lorain County Young Authors Conference. Competing against ten other schools in the county, two talented students brought home top honors.

Fourth grader Toni Gonzalez-Sanchez won the Best Writer Award for her imaginative book, The Trio. This fantasy tale follows a young girl named Lily as she embarks on a magical journey to find a family guide hidden by her ancestors in the forest. Along the way, Lily encounters numerous adventures and enchanting creatures, making for a captivating read. Toni's work speaks volumes about her creativity and talent.

Fifth grader Layla Smith received the Best Artist Award for her beautifully illustrated book, The Crystal Violet. This adventure story features an elusive sea creature that helps the main character, Elliana, find true happiness. Layla's vibrant and expressive illustrations add depth and meaning to the narrative, bringing Elliana's journey to life.

When asked about her inspiration, Layla shared, "I thought of my cousin, who is 13. We were playing outside and taking trips to the lake. I've always liked sea creatures, so I thought, why not make a book with my cousin and some sea creatures in it?"

Reflecting on her win, Layla said, "I felt amazing. I was proud of myself, and the only reason I won was because of the hard work I put in with my teachers, Ms. Nelson and Ms. Beribak. I couldn't have done it without my friends and teachers' help and support. I was so proud to represent my school and be able to come back and tell Mrs. Ward and everyone that I was the winner!

"Mrs. Ward always tells us to make her proud when we are out of the building."
