Personal Communication Device Policy

Head image with cell phone
Lorain City Schools has collaborated with administrators, teachers, students, and families to develop an "Away for the Day" rule for Personal Communication Devices (PCDs). This policy aims to enhance student well-being and safety, as well as improve academic and social engagement at school. Away for the Day is in accordance with our current board policy on PCDs.

HIGH SCHOOL
  • PCDs must be out of sight and turned off during class time.
MIDDLE SCHOOLS
  • All three middle schools will implement an "Away for the Day" policy for PCDs.
  • Students must keep their PCDs powered off and stored away for the entire school day.
EXCEPTIONS
  • Exceptions to this policy may be granted by school administration on a case-by-case basis for health-related reasons (doctor's documentation required).
  • Alignment with students' 504 plans and IEPs, and other significant circumstances, as approved by an administrator.
POLICY VIOLATIONS
  • Violations of this policy will result in the PCD being confiscated.
  • Continued or on going violations will result in parent, guardian, or designee being required to retrieve the device from the school.

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?

Recent research has highlighted significant concerns regarding the impact of excessive cell phone use on children and adolescents. Studies indicate that unrestricted use of Personal Communication Devices (PCDs) can pose risks to students' mental health, academic performance, and social-emotional development.

In light of these findings, and out of deep care and concern for our students' well-being, Lorain City Schools is intensifying the enforcement of our current PCD policy to reflect our commitment to creating a more focused and healthy learning environment that nurtures each student's academic, social, and emotional growth. We believe that by addressing the challenges posed by PCDs, we can better support our students in reaching their full potential.
