February is Black History Month!
Throughout the month, Lorain City Schools will be celebrating the accomplishments and culture of people of Black Americans. There will be many opportunities for students to learn about and reflect on the impact of black people on the world. We hope you will join us in this celebration by attending events at your child's school.
February 2
Palm Elementary's Family Engagement Night on Thursday, February 2, from 5:30 - 7:00 PM will have a Black History Month Theme. Area puppeteer Cheryl Carter will share her love of storytelling. Students and parents will make their own puppets and enjoy dinner.
February 7
Washington Elementary will welcome families for a day of black history celebration at 10:00 AM on February 7.
February 9
Lorain Schools will celebrate Black History Month with a FREE screening of Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" at 6:00 PM on Thursday, February 9, at the Lorain High School Performing Arts Center. The movie starts at 6:00 PM, and all families are welcome to attend.
February 16
Admiral King Elementary will invite the county for its annual celebration at 5:00 PM on February 16.
February 18
Toni Morrison Elementary will celebrate the school's namesake throughout this month. Students enter the Toni Morrison writing contest every year and plan a birthday celebration on February 18.
February 28
Hawthorne Elementary is having a Black History Month gallery walk on February 28 from 1-2 PM. Each student or class will display something connected to black history in various formats.
February 28
General Johnnie Wilson Middle School will present a Black History Month celebration from 5:00-7:00 PM on February 28 that will take attendees on a journey through the history of African American culture, exploring the role of family and love, the influence of culture and the power of resistance, through interactive family activities. Activities include a display of student work, oral readings, African and modern dance, trivia, art and music, African drumming, skits, a fashion show, and a community resource fair.
