LHS UPDATE: October 1, 2021

Dear Titan Families!

October is here! This week we celebrated National Voter Registration Day with help from Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley’s office, we engaged with the Lorain County Metro Parks — getting in some dynamite field work with our Lake Erie Ecology students — and we pushed 11th period into its second week of providing after school support for kids in need! Sweater weather is here, get those fire pits going, and enjoy a beautiful fall weekend in Northeast Ohio!

Voter Registration Drive | This week, we AGAIN received support from the Mayor’s office as we worked to get our 18-year-old students registered to vote! Staff members Molly Tyson and Melissa Wodtly helped coordinate a voter registration drive in the cafeteria each day this week during lunch periods. Debora Bradley and Inez James were on campus on Tuesday celebrating National Voter Registration Day. Debora and Inez met with students in small groups, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement through registering to vote, and then offered to walk interested students through the registration process.

Science Rules | Crazy cool stuff happening in Mr. Wood’s Lake Erie Ecology course this week as students conducted field work at French Creek and Century Park.

At French Creek students took a walk back through time, with Park Naturalist Rachel Kalizewski and Outdoor Experiences Manager Jannah Wilson, where they learned how Native Americans once lived throughout the area. Next, students put on their waders and grabbed their dip nets to sample a nearby creek for macroinvertebrates. By sampling the creek students determined the creeks water quality using a biotic index. And finally, the class wrapped up their day by hosting a beach cleanup at Century Park.

Next week, the class plans to meet up with LoCo Yaks where they will be kayaking the Black River with a local scientist and historian as guides. After that they will be hosting a river cleanup.

If you’re student would  like to learn more about taking this class in the future, please be sure to reach out to your counselor in counselors' row. This course qualifies students for a community service graduation seal!

11th Period is Rolling | 11th period is up and running here at Lorain High School! If you feel your son or daughter would benefit from additional academic support, please reach out to their guidance counselor to get more information! Contact information for counselors can be found right here.

No School on Friday October 8th | A reminder the upcoming week is a 4-day week. Lorain High School is closed for NEOEA day on Friday, October 8th.

Attendance | We need your student here and we need them here by 7:15 AM at the latest! One thing COVID has taught us, there is no replacement for having your children in our classrooms and under our care. If they are here at school, on time, learning is optimized! Please do everything you can to make sure your student is here on time and ready to learn. We can’t wait to see them each morning!

FinalForms = EMA’s - We need your help | FinalForms is our new way to collect all of the “parent homework” you typically get on the first day of school. We have too many of you who have yet to complete this important task! If you haven’t already, please click on this link in order to quickly get started creating a FinalForms account and complete the important (and legally required paperwork). We must have this completed! If you run into questions or concerns, you can always stop in the LHS main office and get whatever help you need.

Have a great weekend, and as always, you can reach me directly at [email protected].
