August 24, 2022 | Lorain City Schools will host its first-ever Family Summit on Saturday, September 10, 2022, with an inspirational message for families on how to advocate for their children in the classroom from the 2022 National Teacher of the Year Kurt Russell.

Russell, currently in his 25th year in the classroom, teaches at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, where he was born and raised. Inspired to become an educator by his first Black male teacher, Russell works to emphasize cultural relevance and diverse representation in the curriculum of classes he teaches, including African American history; U.S. history; International Baccalaureate History of the Americas; and Race, Gender and Oppression.

The Lorain City Schools Family Summit aims to support students, families, and our community by fostering engaged, active participation in programming that celebrates learning and welcomes families while embracing diversity through cultural awareness and inclusion. This learning opportunity will allow parents to engage with each other while learning about community supports, services, and available resources.

“Our Family Summit has been a work in progress for many months with the goal of presenting families with a dynamic event where they can learn and grow as advocates for their children’s education and walk away with helpful information,” shared Stephanie Alexander-Johnson, Director of Wraparound Services. “Mr. Kurt Russell is a phenomenal teacher, but he is also an engaged parent and will share with families how they can support their children’s success both inside and outside the classroom.

“We are honored to have Mr. Russell serve as the keynote speaker for our Family Summit.”

The Family Summit will be packed with informative workshops from community partners geared at empowering families to be advocates for their children and partners in Lorain City Schools’ plans for the future. Several community agencies will host workshops on topics like the importance of voting, how families can take advantage of Lorain County Community College resources, and how families of students with disabilities can effectively address concerns with educators.

Agencies who have signed on to attend include (but are not limited to):
  • Lorain County Community College
  • Lorain Public Library
  • Lorain Big Brothers and Big Sisters
  • Lorain County Veterans Commission
  • Lorain County ESC Parent Mentors
  • Lorain County Urban League
  • The Blessing House
  • North Coast Eye Care
  • Genesis House
  • Mental Health, Addiction, and Recovery (MHARS) Board of Lorain County
  • The Ohio State University Young Scholars
  • Oho Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities

“The reach of the Family Summit is broad to give families a one-stop shop to soak up as much information as possible,” Alexander-Johnson said. “We have thought of everything. We will serve free breakfast and lunch, offer a KidsZone with fun, supervised activities so adults don’t have to worry about child care, and will have several raffles and giveaways.

“Each Lorain City Schools event is designed to give families everything they need to join us on their child’s educational journey because we want them to feel like they are part of our family — to us, they already are!”
