LHS UPDATE: Sept. 17, 2021

LHS UPDATE: Sept. 17, 2021

We are turning the corner on what has been a beautiful month of September here at Lorain High School. Interim reports are available, Homecoming week is upon us, a “White Out” is planned for our home game against Cleveland Heights, 11th Period is started, and there is a 3-day weekend for students! See below for more details, and as always, GO TITANS!!

Interim Reports | We are rounding the corner on the halfway point of our first academic quarter, and interim reports on your students progress are available via PowerSchool. Of note, interim reports will not be mailed home. So please review these in PowerSchool at your earliest convenience, and as always, email your student’s teachers with any questions or concerns. If you are unsure of how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal, please reach out directly to your child's counselor, and they can generate a “Parent Access Letter” for you that includes instructions and login credentials.

TikTok “Lick Challenge” We need your help with this one! There is a viral TikTok “Lick Challenge” that involves students stealing or damaging school property and posting video of this on TikTok. We saw several bathroom mirrors broken over the last day or so at LHS and we believe it to be related to this challenge. Please speak with your student about this, reinforcing the same thing that we’ll be reinforcing at school. Specifically, damaging school property is a serious offense and can/will carry serious consequences. Videos of students damaging school property can absolutely be used as evidence. Beyond that, this is YOUR school, and it is a state-of-the-art building, let’s take care of it! Thank you in advance for partnering with us in helping students take great care of our amazing school!

Homecoming Dresses! | Special thanks to Bay High School Key Club and our LHS Key Club members. Bay High School’s Key Club donated 97 gently used homecoming dresses to our LHS Key Club this morning. Tide Dry Cleaners volunteered to dry clean each dress for us. If you’re student might be in need of a homecoming dress, please reach out to our Key Club advisor, Lauren Hetrick ([email protected]) for more details.

Homecoming Tickets | Tonight, Friday, September 17, 2021, is the last opportunity to purchase Homecoming tickets. They can be purchased online at this link! Sales will be held until midnight. All students must have their student ID to purchase tickets. The full number is the passcode.

11th Period begins Sept. 22 | We will be getting started with 11th period, our after-school enrichment program, beginning this Wednesday, September 22nd. Counselors are identifying students and offering students in need of additional support the opportunity to stay after school and get the help they need beginning Wednesday. If you believe your student might be a good candidate for this, please email their counselor directly. Their emails are at the top of this letter.

  • As an additional layer to our 11th period programming, CTE-sponsored industry credentialing is set to begin October 4th. Again, families should email their student's guidance counselor with questions about this opportunity.

No School on Monday, 9/20 | Just a reminder, Monday September 20th is a district professional development day. Students should remain home on Monday, with school resuming on Tuesday, September 21st.

Attendance We need your student here and we need them here by 7:15 AM at the latest. One thing COVID has taught us, there is no replacement for having your children in our classrooms and under our care. If they are here at school, on time, learning is optimized! Please do everything you can to make sure your student is here on time and ready to learn. We can’t wait to see them each morning!

FinalForms = EMA’s - We need your help! FinalForms are our new way to collect all of the “parent homework” you typically get on the first day of school. We have too many of you who have yet to complete this important task! If you haven’t already, please click on this link in order to quickly get started creating a FinalForms account and complete the important (and legally required paperwork). We must have this completed! If you run into questions or concerns, you can always stop in the LHS main office and get whatever help you need.

Masks | Our students have been doing a great job wearing masks to help prevent the spread of COVID in our schools. Please remember you can always get the latest guidelines and updates on the COVID Dashboard at: lorainschools.org/COVID

Friday Night Lights! | Lorain High will play Cleveland Heights tonight at George Daniel Field Stadium. Gates will open to fans at 6:00 PM. Tickets will be sold at the gate, but fans are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets online. The other option would be to purchase a Season Pass.  Pass options and pricing can be found at HERE. Please contact the Athletic Department to schedule a day/time to purchase a pass.

Tonight’s theme is a “WHITE OUT”, prizes for ALL who attend, sit in the student section, who are respectfully cheering our Titans on and who are wearing White. Let's BEAT the Tigers. Of note, all students who do not attend with a parent, will be required to sit in the student section.

Text Notifications | Did you know you can sign up to receive text messages from Lorain High? If you wish to receive text messages with important reminders and notifications from our school, be sure your cell number is entered into your child’s Final Forms account (instructions on updating your student's contact information can be found at this link) and that you have sent “Y” (or “yes”), via text message, to short code 67587.

oneLHS | Next Friday, September 24th, we will be hosting our first oneLHS meeting.
This will be a student-led club that aims to empower our students to create a positive, productive, and peaceful narrative regarding our high school community. Our school culture and identity will be defined by our STUDENTS and SUPPORTED by our adults. Let your students’ voice be heard regarding the type of high school that THEY want to attend. Encourage them to attend the oneLHS breakfast on Friday morning. Details on registration have been shared with your student via email.

Curriculum Highlight | Roxanne Ramirez and Lisa Babics coordinated a lesson this week with Unified Sports - Special Olympics, who donated T-shirts and dye so that our MH students could perform a chromatography experiment through creating tie-dye t-shirts. They picked some great weather to move the lab outside, as well!

Best,

Patrick Coleman
