LHS UPDATE: Sept. 3, 2021

LHS UPDATE: Sept. 3, 2021

Dear Titan Families!

As we wrap up our second full week of instruction, I want to thank you for all you’ve done to ensure your student is here on time, ready to learn. Before we head off into Labor Day weekend, a few updates:

  • Our students have been doing a great job wearing masks to help prevent the spread of COVID in our schools. Please remember you can always get the latest guidelines and updates on the COVID Dashboard at: lorainschools.org/COVID.

  • Lorain High will host Elyria in varsity football this Friday, Sept 3 at 7pm. Gates will open to fans at 6pm. Fans are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets online.

  • The 2020-2021 Lorain Sports Hall of Fame enshrinement banquet will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at German’s Villa in Vermilion. We’ll be sure to share photos and video of this year’s inductees! In the meantime, read all about this year's inductees here.

  • Homecoming ticket sales will run September 6 - 17th.

  • Did you know you can sign up to receive text messages from Lorain High? If you wish to receive text messages with important reminders and notifications from our school, be sure your cell number is entered into your child’s Final Forms account (instructions on updating your student's contact information can be found at this link) and that you have sent “Y” (or “yes”), via text message, to short code 67587.

  • When we return from the long weekend, we will begin working with students on ways to resolve conflicts without resorting to verbal and physical violence. We’ll be reaching out to parents and community members to take part in these efforts to ensure our students feel welcome, safe, and appreciated at Lorain High. More to come!

More details can be found in the space below. Hope to see you at the game tonight, and enjoy your three-day weekend! As always, you can reach me directly at [email protected].

Best,

Patrick Coleman

Principal - Lorain High School

COVID SAFETY | If your student is not feeling well, please do not send them to school. Students who are feeling under the weather will be required to visit our wellness clinic and ultimately sent back home. As a reminder, the following symptoms are associated with COVID 19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle or body aches

  • Headache

  • New loss of taste or smell

  • Sore throat

  • Congestion or runny nose

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Diarrhea

Isolating students who are experiencing any of these symptoms is a critical component to our campus mitigation plan and is rooted in prioritizing the health and safety of all our people, most of all your students! As always, thank you for your support and cooperation. More information on all of the steps we are talking to keep your student safe, along with COVID related data, guidelines, and protocols can be found at lorainschools.org/covid.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM |  If your student is at home and needing to make up work, please guide them to their Google Classrooms, as our teachers are updating these sites daily with instructional content and make up work. In order to navigate to their Google Classrooms, students simply need to log into their ChromeBook, and enter classroom.google.com in the browser's address bar. This leads to a landing page that includes each of the courses on your student's schedule.

FINAL FORMS | It is critical that we have your up-to-date contact information updated in Final Forms.

The district has migrated to Final Forms as a means to help make the myriad of papers and documents that you ordinarily turn in at the start of each school year as easy and seamless as possible. One of the most important functionalities of Final Forms is that it maintains up-to-date contact information for you. If you are having issues with getting Robocalls, newsletters (like this one) and other correspondence, it might be because you haven’t activated your Final Forms account and submitted up-to-date information.

In order to get started, just click on this link and click on “new account” under the parent icon to create an account and get up and running. This is a mandatory process for all families. You must create an account in Final Forms in order to submit the required EMA information, gain access to our student handbook, student code of conduct, etc.

If you encounter any difficulties, don’t hesitate to stop in our Main Office and we can walk you through the process.

LUNCH IS SERVED |  All students have access to two free meals in our cafeteria each day. We offer breakfast and lunch to all. Additionally students can bring their own food if they prefer. We DO NOT, however, allow parents to bring up food during the day, or food vendor services (Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc.) to bring food to our building.

SUPPORTING YOUR STUDENT THROUGH POST SECONDARY TRANSITION | There are several presentations coming up that can help your student successfully transition to a post high school world.

See the flyers below for more information! You can always reach out to our transition coordinator, Nicole Weaver, at [email protected] for more information.

LHS KEY CLUB 2021-2022 | If you are interested in your child joining LHS’s Key Club for the 2021-2022 school year, they are back in action this year. Please have your student email Ms. Zimmerman at [email protected] to get started.

Here are some of the great benefits to Key Club

  • Clubs like Key Club have a reputation for being a great club to have on college applications.

  • Key Club establishes friendships and opportunities to give back to society by volunteering.

  • The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness.

  • SCHOLARSHIPS ARE POSSIBLE when it becomes time to start thinking of college.

They work closely with Second Harvest, Catholic Charities, Clothing Drives, Canned Food/Holiday Donations, Clothe-A-Child, Anchor Lodge of Lorain and are sponsored by Lorain and Elyria Kiwanis!

CASH FOR COLLEGE |  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid/FAFSA is now available for completion. By completing this document, most Lorain seniors will receive free money from the government called a Pell Grant. This Grant could be worth as much as $6,300. For more information and assistance completing this document, email Mr. Newman/the College Guy at [email protected] or text him at 440-308-7851.

STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM STRUCTURE AT LHS | Often in large comprehensive high schools, assistant principals, guidance counselors and in many instances social workers, serve students according to their current grade level. This results in students being re-assigned a new assistant principal, counselor, etc.. at the start of each school year. We believe that the relationships that we develop with our students and families are as important as any other aspect of our work. To this end, we are going to be servicing students by alphabetical breakdown, whereas an assistant principal, and guidance counselor, will serve as the leadership foundation for each of these Student Support Teams. Your child’s Student Support Team assignment will remain consistent for their four years at Lorain High. This means students and families won’t need to rebuild relationships with a new team each year. Additionally, our teams will sharpen their synergy and collaborative approach to supporting kids and families, as they develop deeper professional relationships over time.

See the table below that outlines our SST breakdown by alphabet.
