Masks Voluntary as of June 2

Masks Voluntary as of June 2

Beginning Wednesday, June 2nd, the Lorain City Schools will no longer require masks or social distancing inside or outside of district facilities. Masks in our schools will be voluntary, in alignment with Governor Mike DeWine's lifting of most of the state's health order on this date. Read the announcement here.

Under the new order, establishments no longer need to require masks for individuals to enter their premises. Governor Mike DeWine stated that because there is no way for a school or business in Ohio to check someone’s vaccination status, the change applies to vaccinated and unvaccinated residents. Read the CDC's summary of updates for vaccinated people here.

Lorain City Schools will continue to provide hand sanitizer and social distancing options for individuals who require these protective measures.

As we close out this chapter on COVID-19, we want to thank each student, each staff member, our families and community for your commitment to the safety of our schools this past year. Here's a brief snapshot of the success of your efforts:

  • Lorain City Schools administered 8,167 COVID tests, and was recognized as the only school district in Ohio to use this mitigation strategy

  • Our schools were recognized for having the lowest positivity rate in the county, averaging under one percent at .77%
  • We conducted 14 vaccination clinics in partnership with the Lorain County Health Department and our community
  • Our staff was recognized for its high vaccination rate at 93.2%
  • Our COVID-safe approach and comprehensive mitigation strategy will be featured in a research brief by Dr. Prakash Ganesh in the "American Journal of Public Health."

Please know that even as we count our blessings through the above statistics, we know the losses in our community run deep. For every family member, friend and neighbor who became severely ill or died within this pandemic, we mourn with you and wish you strength. If we can provide you with support in any form, please let us know. You are not alone.
