Mask Guidelines for the Start of School

August 10, 2021 | The Lorain City School District continues to work closely with Lorain County Public Health, MercyHealth - Lorain and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine to interpret federal and state COVID guidance at the local level in Lorain County and the City of Lorain.

As we prepare for the 2021/2022 school year, we are closely monitoring local positivity and transmission rates to inform our mitigation strategies to reduce viral spread and keep our students, staff and community safe.

The Lorain City Schools Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, August 10th to discuss current COVID conditions, the Delta variant, community feedback and guidance from our health partners pertaining to the start of school. The Board released the following information in preparation of school to resume August 18th:

  • Lorain City Schools partnered with Lorain County Public Health to administer 14 mass vaccination clinics last school year, helping to vaccinate thousands of individuals through those efforts.
  • Lorain City Schools will continue to work closely with the County to provide opportunities for individuals to receive the vaccine. Specific details coming soon.
  • Lorain City Schools recommends everyone over the age of 12 who is not vaccinated to wear a mask indoors.
  • Lorain City Schools students under the age of 12 are required to wear a mask. The only exceptions are students with medical exemptions, children younger than 2 years, students with difficulty breathing, and students unable to place or remove the mask.
  • Lorain City Schools follow CDC requirements for all students on school transportation to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.
District officials will continue to meet regularly with health experts to learn of any changes in COVID conditions so that we can be prepared to make changes as necessary. Lorain City Schools will continue to keep community members informed through its online COVID Dashboard, located at lorainschools.org/covid
