Lorain High September Newsletter

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL MELISSA CHEERS
To say the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of excitement would be an understatement! This school year, I am excited to lead Lorain High School as your principal — so much so that I jumped right into creating the best environment for your children to learn and grow that I haven't done the most important job: connecting with you.

I accepted the role as Lorain High School principal because I believe there is greatness in your children, all of our children. The children I see walking the halls each day at Lorain High are extraordinary thinkers, innovators, and compassionate leaders. They know they have what it takes to stand out and take charge, to change the world.

Knowing I have the awesome job of helping them get there is beyond my wildest dreams.
This message will be one of many from me as we work together to ensure your children, our Titans, have the best high school experience possible. While you are here, check out some of the great things happening at Lorain High School, and remember, GO TITANS!

CHEERS FROM CHEERS!
  • Congratulations to our Summer 2022 Graduates! Commencement was held Thursday at Lorain High School for those students that completed their graduation requirements over the summer. We are proud of all they have accomplished.
  • Shout out to our LHS Marching Band and Band Director Ted Terhune for an incredible performance at the 50th Annual Elyria Parade of Bands held on September 17th.
  • LHS staff are dedicated to acknowledging students that demonstrate Kindness to self, others, and the environment throughout each month with positive office referrals. We are excited to say that our PBIS committee mailed certificates to 30 recently referred students for exemplary behavior and kindness on our campus.
  • Starting October 7th, Principal Cheers will host a First Friday Parent & Family Community Coffee at the LHS Lighthouse Grill Restaurant near the Lorain High School Sports Hall of Fame (enter by the cafeteria.) If you are a parent/guardian bringing your child to school, stop and enjoy a free cup of coffee (available to go). Principal Cheers would love to meet you.
  • Interim grades were made available last week in PowerSchool. We appreciate your continued support by checking your child's academic progress!
  • LifeTouch will be on campus Friday, Sept. 23, to take staff and student photos for the new school year.   Come as you are, come dressed up, or come with a mask, but please have your picture taken.

HOMECOMING 2022
This year's Homecoming Dance is set for Saturday, October 1, in the Lorain High School gym, with the theme, "Rapunzel's Lanterns."

Students may begin arriving at 6:15 PM for photos and snacks. Tickets are now on sale online until Friday, Sept. 23. They are $22 each. Students attending LHS can purchase tickets online using the QR Code attached to the event posters around school or by clicking HERE.

KINDNESS MATTERS | OUR PBIS APPROACH
Have you heard about Lorain City Schools’ work around kindness as our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support) approach?

This school year, we are working hard to create a culture of kindness at Lorain High School, imploring every student to pick up the mantra of “Be Kind of Self, Kind of Others, and Kind to Our Environment.”

We are doing this because we believe that as we increase kindness across the district, we will decrease the behaviors that interfere with positive environments.

To help spread the word, our Football, Cheerleading, and Dance teams starred in the production of a short video, “What KIND of Titans are we?” that explains all the work we are doing.

LHS Social Workers Amy DeTuillo and Sly WorthyMEET OUR LHS SOCIAL WORKERS
LHS Social Workers Amy DeTuillo and Sly WorthyAt Lorain High School, there is a place where students can go where their needs will be met, and someone is willing to listen. We call it the Titan Resource Center, which is staffed by two social workers – Sly Worthy Jr. and Amy DiTullio – who are there each day to work with our students in various ways.

Our school social workers are often called on to help students, families, and teachers address problems such as truancy, social withdrawal, overaggressive behaviors, rebelliousness, and the effects of special physical, emotional, or economic problems.

Students and families can get help through our Titan Resource Center by completing the form HERE.

CTE CORNER: VIDEO PRODUCTIONS DELIVERS THE NEWS
The day would not be the same for Lorain High staff and students without Titan News.

At 9:00 AM each morning, students watch their peers in the Video Production Program deliver the morning announcements from the TV20 studio. Terry Traut's Video Production second-year students produce, host, and edit Titan News five days a week.

The Video Production Program is a two-year pathway where students can earn credentials in Adobe software, including becoming an Adobe Certified Expert in PhotoShop, Premiere, and AfterEffects.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Did you know we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the middle of the month to correspond with the independence of many countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile? Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.

We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month daily on our announcements with music, history, and information on the Hispanic diaspora.
