November 2, 2023 | As a result of guns being fired on the west side, parents from multiple schools received many phone calls from us this afternoon, and some of you who were on campus became part of our lockdown.
It was truly an awful situation that was witnessed by many staff and students at Washington Elementary and General Johnnie Wilson Middle School. Although no one to my knowledge was hurt, the entire event was still traumatic for many people. Please know that we will have additional counselors and social workers available at these schools for students and staff tomorrow and for as long as they’re needed. If you recommend or your child wishes to speak to someone, let their teacher know and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.
I do want to applaud our staff, students and safety team for executing our lockdown procedures with precision. And, as always, a huge shoutout to the Lorain Police Department for all that they do to keep our families safe. Chief McCann was on site for the entire event and LPD had over a dozen police cars there in a matter of minutes.
In short, we experienced an absolutely awful situation. But everyone did what they were trained to do. As a result, no one was hurt. As a district, we know how to respond to traumatic situations. We’ll be ready to support you and your loved ones tomorrow.
In the meantime, give your kids a hug tonight and we’ll be there for them in the morning.
Thanks, have a good night.
