NOVEMBER 6, 2023

We couldn't decide on a direction between two great topics for this edition of the Titan Communication Connection.

With the holiday season approaching, we initially thought about how we should spend November talking about how we support our families through our Wraparound Services department because if there is ever a time to be wrapped in love, it is now. Then, something awful happened just a stone's throw from Washington Elementary School and Gen. Johnnie Wilson Middle School, and we quickly wanted to share how we work hard to keep our students and staff safe.

We decided to do both because the health and well-being of our Titan family are not more important than the safety of those we love and vice versa. Our top priorities are our students' and staff's health, well-being, and safety.

Officer Gerace was outside Washington Elementary School Thursday, helping with dismissal, when he heard shots in the neighborhood. Officer Gerace immediately ran toward the gunfire. Officer Gerace humbly said he didn't do anything that any other officer wouldn't do.

We salute Officer Gerace as a Titan Hero who was Caught Being Great!

In the last three school days, that has played out in real time. While our Safety and Security Team worked with the Lorain Police Department on Thursday to keep everyone safe, our team at Wraparound Services implemented a support plan to ensure counselors and social workers were at Washington Elementary and Gen. Johnnie Wilson Middle schools first thing Friday and Monday mornings. Duke, a lovable therapy dog, has made the rounds and received more than his fair share of hugs.

District administrators dropped what they were doing to be at our schools to greet students as they started their day. Just friendly faces happy to say, "Good morning' and 'We are glad you are here.'

Helping each other is just part of our Titan spirit.

We have school counselors and social workers available in every building. Their job is to focus on students' social-emotional well-being and to build relationships with students so they know a trusted adult is there when they need it most.

Did you know we have a Family Engagement Center that coordinates support for our families, offering everything from coats, clothes, and shoes to access to counseling services? We connect our families to resources in our community to help with utilities, housing, or food. We know that life can often throw us curve balls, and when that happens, we want you to know that we are here to help.

Families can connect to our Family Engagement Center by calling (440)830-HELP (4357) or visiting lorainschools.org/HELP..

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT: OWL PELLET DISSECTION

A recent science lesson with Brandi Guyer and Lisa Pierce's fourth-grade classes brought students up close and personal to something few have seen, let alone handled, before – owl pellets. And, while owl pellets are not poop, they are something just as intriguing, and the task of dissecting the solid golf ball-sized capsules in this hands-on lesson garnered some very strong reactions from students.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT: LHS DRAMA CLUB

Our Lorain High School Drama Club staged a spectacular production of "10 Ways To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse". This short comedy allowed our student performers to showcase their comedic chops in a fun, lighthearted way.
