Parents at Admiral King Elementary are invited to participate in the Parent Project, a program designed to address the challenges facing families of strong-willed children to support their academic success.
Parent Project workshops begin Monday, March 1st and will be offered via Zoom 7:30PM - 9:00PM. Interested Admiral King families should contact Principal Amy Graves at [email protected] for the Zoom link.
Parent Project programming will be offered to all elementary school families in the Lorain City Schools in April, and expanded to middle and high school families in the fall.
“Parents are the key to securing our future,” shared Amy Graves, Principal of Admiral King Elementary. “And right now, parents need help. Increased technology, remote and virtual learning, social distancing and Covid-19 have put parents in a difficult spot of trying to juggle home, work and school during a pandemic. Our hope is to provide added supports so that we can all be successful in serving the needs surfacing at this time.”
Admiral King Elementary Social Worker Karen Knerem agrees. “Programs like Parent Project ensure the next generation of parents are equipped to tackle the growing pressures our youth are facing. We hope this program is a launching pad for our schools and parents to better partner in challenges related to the social emotional well-being of our children, in addition to the regular academic, social, and policy issues that affect our schools.”
The Parent Project is the latest example of how the Lorain City School District has invested in support for our children and families during the pandemic. However, hiring additional social workers may have had the biggest impact district-wide. The district’s social work team has played an integral role connecting our schools and homes especially during the adjustment to Phase 1: Remote Learning. Social workers have also provided critical access to community resources for families facing food and housing insecurity, and the need for better access to medical care and mental health supports at this time.

Parent Project is the nation’s largest program for parents dealing with destructive behaviors in children and teens. In its 30 years, the program has partnered with more than 500,000 parents to teach prevention and intervention strategies for child behavior modification. Parent Project has been the subject of numerous academic studies, consistently showing significant improvement in parental knowledge and skills, reduction in youth destructive behavior and increases in expressions of love in the home.
