GJW Middle School "Welcome Home" Virtual Newsletter | November 2020

“WELCOME HOME”, NOVEMBER, 2020

Hello GJW Parents and Students,

Welcome to Autumn! We are into the month of November and great things are happening here at GJW!  October was filled with many great activities! We implemented the IREADY Math and English Language Arts diagnostic assessments. This allowed us to provide our learners with the most accurate learning resources and supports. We also initiated our student characteristic of the month. October was responsibility! We also initiated GJW Student Council and GJW GENTS (GJW boys group). Our GJW student clubs have started and students are participating in great virtual learning and fun activities!

The staff at GJW is amazing and is dedicated to ensuring that your student is prepared to learn on line and engage in activities outside of academics that build a connection to GJW even in their virtual environment. This new online learning approach has helped us to look at learning in a new and different way. In our day to day experiences with the online learning we have learned that there are some obstacles that we cannot prevent but, as a team we collaborate to resolve the obstacles that we encounter.

Thank you to all of our GJW Parents for your support of our efforts to engage students in virtual learning on synchronous days and collaborate with teachers and complete assigned work on asynchronous days. At GJW we are striving to be the best in our academics, attendance and our attitude and we need your help.

Academics Matter at GJW! In reviewing the 1st quarter grades, it appears that I was not clear of the importance of attending our “virtual school” each day and completing assigned tasks. Over 50% of our students had a failing grade for the 1st quarter.

Attendance Matters at GJW! Students are expected to virtually attend all scheduled classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 1st quarter data reveals that students attended the morning classes more consistently than afternoon classes. Please ensure that your student is attending all classes daily. When students don’t attend classes they miss valuable learning. We want all students to receive attendance incentives!

Attitude Matters at GJW! Our GJW students have done a great job of modeling this for our students! Thank you for supporting our efforts to develop a behavior protocol for this “new virtual learning.” We want to ensure that students are engaged in learning and encounter limited distractions during this time.

Thank you to parents that attended the GJW Parent Power School Zoom Meeting. As we continue to navigate the virtual learning environment it in important to the GJW team that we keep our parents and students informed about the GJW activities and events. The 1st quarter has ended and report cards are ready for view.

The GJW administration team, staff and students, would like to welcome Michelle Stipe to the GJW Building Leadership Team. Thank you Ms. Stipe for supporting GJW. If you are interested in participating in one of our meetings, please see the schedule below. Please call ahead of time if you are planning to attend.

The staff at GJW is aware that online learning is new for you as well! We would like to offer you a few tips to ensure that your student(s) is not distracted during instructional time.

It is expected that all students will log in to classes on time.

It is also expected that all students will be clothed during instructional times.
We strongly recommend that students find a quiet area to work.
All students were given ear phones. We recommend that all students use their head phones during instructional times.
We recommend that students complete in a room with few distractions.
If your student is ill and will not attend classes, please give us a call at (440) 830-4240.

As we enter these new times in the world and in education, I want to ensure you that we are taking all precautions to ensure that all students, staff, and community members are safe during this time.  If you have any questions about the LCS Restart Plan, please see the district website.

Counseling Corner –NOVEMBER 2020

Mrs. Kelley Barnes

Love Yourself
Self-care is one of those healthy life skills that may be put on the back burner as we become too busy with work, family and school.  However, practicing self-care can make us feel happier and more physically, mentally and emotionally able to deal with life’s pressures and stresses.  Prioritizing self-care helps parents become great role models for their children as they rapidly transition toward adulthood.  Self-care is any activity that we can enjoy doing in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health.  It is something that refuels us, rather than take from us.

Self- Care for Families:
    Verbalize and talk about feelings
    Say “I love you”
Go on a bike ride or a hike
    Volunteer together
    Practice positive self talk
    Read together
Have a morning and night routine
Have a device free family dinner
    Write each other positive notes
Have talks about friendships and how to be a friend
Stay connected and with family and friends
Don’t forget to join my google classrooms:

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (440) 830-4240.

Our theme this year is “Welcome Home.” My vision is that every student, staff member and community member feel that GJW is home and a great place to learn and grow!

Sincerely,
Nikole L. Davis
