Article: Fall Sports Eligibility

Fall Sports Eligibility

SPORTS ELIGIBILITY | The OHSAA has waived all academic eligibility requirements for the first quarter of the 2021-22 school year. The following details were provided by Athletic Director Bryan Koury. Please contact him with questions at (440) 830-4009 or [email protected].

Bylaw 4-4 (Scholarship)

  • All student-athletes are eligible, with respect to their OHSAA scholarship eligibility, for the first grading period of the 2021-22 school year unless your school chose to enforce your own scholarship standard or unless the student-athlete failed to meet your self-established minimum GPA standard.
  • Fall and winter athletes need to be certain they are scheduled for at least five (5) credits at the high school level or four (4) classes at the 7th-8th grade level.
  • If an athlete does not pass the five-credit/four-class standard in the first grading period this coming fall, then he/she will become ineligible at the start of the fifth school day of the second grading period.

It was recently determined that the current LCS board policy requiring all students to have a minimum of a 1.0 GPA for the previous quarter will also be waived for the the first 9 weeks of the 2021-22 school year. This means that all athletes will start the school year academically eligible as long as middle school students are enrolled in a minimum of 4 classes and high school students are enrolled in a minimum of 5 credits.

Although all fall student-athletes are academically eligible, it does not guarantee that they are able to participate if in fact they attended another high school over the past year.  Any student that has transferred in over the past year will need to complete OHSAA paperwork to petition for eligibility. Parents/guardians of transfer students should contact the Athletic Department to schedule a meeting to discuss the process that is involved with petitioning for eligibility. This only applies to students entering grades 10-12. This bylaw does not pertain to students entering grades 7-9.
