Dr. Thomas G. Jama
Dr. Thomas G. Jama, an accomplished educator, leader, and community advocate, began building the foundation of his remarkable career at Admiral King High School, where he graduated in 1984. Even as a student, he demonstrated a rare combination of academic excellence, athletic talent, and personal integrity. He was a proud member of the National Honor Society, consistently earned Honor Roll recognition, and had his artwork displayed in the Scholastic Art Show, reflecting his wide-ranging abilities.
Dr. Jama’s commitment to service emerged early through his volunteer work with the Rebounders Club, supporting the school’s athletic programs. On the football field, he distinguished himself as a four-year player, earning All Buckeye Conference honors and the prestigious Gary Krause Award. A two-way starter, he also held the school record for most extra points, a testament to his reliability and competitive spirit. His talent earned him a football scholarship to Slippery Rock University, where he majored in Early Childhood Education. In addition to his academic and athletic pursuits, he became a National Judo Champion, showcasing his discipline and drive.
In track and field, Dr. Jama was a four-year letterman, competing in shot put and discus. He earned the Coach’s Award, recognizing his leadership, perseverance, and dedication to his team. Among his favorite high school memories were being part of the county record-setting track team that earned him a cherished championship jacket. Other fond memories of High School include long conversations about football and life with Mr. Ilcisko and Mr. Herrmann, and the unforgettable sound of his mother, Mariann Jama, ringing her cowbell in the stands at every football game.
Dr. Jama continued his academic journey by earning a Master’s Degree from Ashland University and later completing his Doctoral Degree in Organizational Leadership in 2006. His professional career reflects a deep commitment to educational excellence and community advancement. He made history as the first male kindergarten teacher in Lorain County, breaking barriers and inspiring future educators. His leadership trajectory led him to serve as Superintendent of Clearview Local Schools and later Superintendent of Elyria City Schools, where he oversaw major initiatives, including the successful renewal levies in both districts.
His outstanding leadership has been recognized through numerous honors. He was named Principal of the Year by The Chronicle‑Telegram and received the Proclamation of Educational Excellence from both the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission (2014) and the Lorain County Board of Commissioners (2015). Additional proclamations followed from the City of Elyria Mayor’s Office (2020), the Ohio General Assembly (2020), and the Ohio Senate (2021). His contributions to educational leadership were further acknowledged with a Proclamation of Leadership from Secretary of State Jon Husted (2015), an Educational Leadership Award from the Lorain County Urban League (2015), and a Leadership Award from the Lorain/Elyria Ministerial Alliance (2017). He also served as a presenter at the Coalition of Essential Schools Conference, sharing his expertise with educa-tors nationwide.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Jama’s greatest pride is his family. He is married to Kelly, and together they have two sons, Kyle and Patrick, and four beloved grandchildren: Brayden, Carter, Hazel, and Troy.
