Keeping Our Schools Safe and Secure

Keeping Our Schools Safe and Secure
Man in suit standing by brick wall

Last week, several schools across Northeast Ohio, including one of our own, responded to social media threats. One of our 14 buildings was temporarily closed for an investigation, and thanks to the quick work of the Lorain Police Department, the source of the threat was discovered before most schools were even opened. We are proud of the strong partnership we have with LPD, and it’s through this collaboration that we’re able to keep our schools safe.

As a parent, I understand the worry that comes with sending your children to school during times like this. It’s natural to feel anxious when safety is at stake. That’s why it’s important to remember that, during an active investigation, we are sometimes limited in the specific information we can share. While we always aim to communicate with our families quickly and accurately, often times there are reasons information is temporarily withheld. We need to allow law enforcement to do their job effectively, which ensures the best outcome for everyone.

I also want to recognize the incredible work of our safety team, led by Reuben Figueroa, a respected community member with law enforcement experience. Our safety protocols have been praised by national crisis experts as some of the best they’ve ever seen, which provides me—and I hope all of you—with confidence in the systems we have in place.

Lastly, I want to stress that threats, even those made as jokes, have serious consequences. They disrupt not only the lives of the students involved but also the entire school community. We will always address these matters with the seriousness they deserve. And it's important that if you see something, say something.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and support as we continue to prioritize the safety of every student and staff member in Lorain City Schools.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Honoring Lorain's Rich Latino Legacy

Hispanic Heritage Month Instagram Post in Lemon Yellow Magenta Orange Organic Illustrative Style

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we take pride in recognizing the deep Latino roots that have profoundly shaped our city of Lorain. Our district reflects this heritage, with nearly 46% of our students identifying as Latino.

Lorain's Latino community has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The city became a significant hub for Latino immigrants, particularly from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Central America, who came seeking better opportunities in the steel and manufacturing industries. These early settlers laid the groundwork for Lorain’s vibrant cultural tapestry.

Today, the Latino community continues to make significant contributions across various sectors. From successful local businesses to influential community leaders and educators, the impact is evident. Lorain’s annual Puerto Rican Festival and the Mexican Heritage Festival are just two examples of how our community celebrates its heritage and unites residents.

Our schools are a reflection of this diverse and dynamic community. We are proud to support initiatives that honor Latino culture, history, and achievements. Throughout the month, we will spotlight student accomplishments, local businesses, and share stories that celebrate the rich traditions of our Latino families.

Join us in honoring the vibrant traditions, history, and contributions of our Latino students and families, who make Lorain a truly special place.

Encouraging Excellent Attendance With Titan Fridays

Attendance is crucial to a student's success and overall educational experience. Regular attendance ensures that students are engaged in their learning, can fully participate in classroom activities, and build strong relationships with their peers and teachers. It helps them stay on track with their studies, prevents gaps in knowledge, and supports better academic performance. Consistent attendance fosters a sense of responsibility and discipline, which are essential skills for future success both in and out of the classroom. By prioritizing attendance, we contribute to a positive and productive learning environment that benefits every student.

Our partnership with the Cleveland Browns Stay In The Game Network continues to be key to incentivizing excellent attendance. This school year, we're adding to our attendance awareness campaign with Titan Fridays.

Last Friday, we celebrated our second Titan Friday of the season with another fantastic Surprise Pop-Up Pep Rally at Toni Morrison Elementary School where we cheered on 4th-grader Kaleb Washington for his excellent attendance!

Let’s keep up the Titan spirit strong and continue to celebrate great attendance across the district! And we'll keep showing up with pep rally energy with our Titan football players, cheerleaders, and Titus.

BE ON TIME EVERY DAY AND STAY ALL DAY!

Who will be our next winners? Have great attendance, wear your Titan Pride, and be ready to show your school spirit – it could be you!
