Lorain High’s Darrel Smalls Honored with LCAAA Service Award

A familiar and trusted presence at Lorain High School was recognized recently with a Service Award by the Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association during its annual awards event. Darrel Smalls, Safety Coordinator at Lorain High School, was honored for the care, consistency and support he brings to students, staff and school events. The award honors individuals whose service helps strengthen high school athletics and the broader school community.
At Lorain High School, Smalls is known for building meaningful relationships with students and creating a sense of connection that helps young people feel supported, respected and safe.
That approach carries over into every part of school life, including athletics and school events. Whether he is helping maintain order, supporting students or simply showing up consistently in the halls and common spaces, Smalls represents the kind of service that often happens behind the scenes but makes a lasting difference.
“I’m truly honored to receive this service award,” Smalls said. “Serving my school and community has always meant a lot to me, and I’m grateful to be recognized for something I genuinely care about. Every day brings new challenges, and sometimes a little chaos, but that’s all part of the job.”
“Darrel Smalls exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, integrity and heart,” said Reuben Figueroa, Executive Director of Safety and Security for Lorain City Schools. “His commitment to safety across our district, especially at athletic events, goes far beyond the expectations of the role. He has a unique ability to connect with students, staff and the community, building trust and rapport that creates not just a safer environment, but a stronger one.”
Smalls’ recognition reflects the impact caring adults can have when they lead with presence, consistency and heart. At Lorain High School, that work helps students feel like they belong and helps create a safer, stronger school community for everyone.
