James A. Garfield
Garfield Elementary opened in August of 2005 and is named for Ohio born President James A. Garfield (1831-1881).
President Garfield was born in Ohio and was a teacher and headmaster at several schools before entering politics. He served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and fought in the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh, and Chickamauga. He was first elected to Congress in 1862 to represent Ohio's 19th District. Throughout Garfield's extended congressional service after the Civil War, he firmly supported the gold standard and gained a reputation as a skilled orator. Garfield is one of four American Presidents who have been assassinated while in office. His presidential memorial is located at Lakeview Cemetery near Cleveland, Ohio.
