The new Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards were adopted in June 2015. In total, there are 10 standards. They cover all four domains of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Each standard is broken down into tasks that English Language Learners (ELLs) at different language proficiency levels can complete. The State of Ohio assigns a proficiency level to all ELLs based upon their performance on an annual assessment (formerly OTELA now OELPA) in February or March. The levels range from 1 to 5.
