WHY ARE WE HAVING A FALL SEASON WHEN WE ARE AT A LEVEL 3 DURING A PANDEMIC? IS THIS SAFE?
We are being provided guidance from our local and state health professionals.  Locally, this includes the Lorain County Board of Health and head athletic trainer Tracye Menges of the Cleveland Clinic.  This has allowed us to create in-depth protocols in an effort to protect both our coaches and athletes.  These protocols are attached.  We are currently in “Phase 2”.  Come August 1, 2020, we will be in “Phase 3”.

HOW CAN YOU ASSURE MY CHILD WILL NOT COME IN CONTACT DURING A GAME OR PRACTICE?
We cannot give assurance that any person won’t come in contact whether it be by participating in a sport, going to the store or visiting with a relative.  We can however implement the safety measures that have been recommended by our local health professionals.

WHY ARE WINTER SPORTS TEAMS USING THE GYM AT THIS TIME AND POSSIBLY SHARING THEIR GERMS WITH TEAMS THAT ARE IN SEASON?
We have learned over the years that our athletes are going to find a way to participate in some form of athletic-related activities whether it be those that are administered by outside entities or those being offered by LCS.  With that in mind, we feel that the LCS coaches are the professionals that are best equipped to provide the safest environment possible.

HAVE WE CONSIDERED POSTPONING THE SEASON?
There are no options that are off the table.

HAVE WE CONSIDERED HOLDING THE TRADITIONAL FALL SPORTS IN THE SPRING, WHEN IT MIGHT BE SAFER?
This is actually not a decision that LCS can make.  This would be a decision made by the OHSAA.  We adhere to their bylaws which includes the time of the year in which a sport will be played.

WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL FOR THOSE WORKING AS ATHLETIC FACILITY STAFF OR FOR GAMES?
All game/contest related protocol is currently being created with the guidance from our local health professionals.

WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO WEAR A MASK WHILE COMPETING?
As of yesterday, athletes will have the option of wearing a mask during actual competition, but this will not be mandated.

It is very important to note that Phase guidelines will continue to evolve.  We are currently in “Phase 2”.  Beginning August 1st, we will be in “Phase 3.”  These are the universal guidelines.  Additional guidelines have been provided to coaches based on the individual spaces that they are utilizing along with how they are conducting their sport-specific workouts.  Each workout must be provided to head athletic trainer Tracye Menges for her to approve. She then provides “best practices” based on a variety of factors including:

     - The dynamics of the space in which the activity is taking place.
     - The # of athletes which are participating
     -  The type of workout that is being conducted.

WILL I BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND MY CHILD’S SPORTING EVENTS, BOTH HOME AND AWAY? IF YES, WHAT GUIDELINES WILL YOU PUT IN PLACE FOR SPECTATORS (E.G. MASKS, SOCIAL DISTANCING)
All game/contest related protocol is currently being created with the guidance from our local health professionals.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A TEAMMATE OR ATHLETIC PERSONNEL (E.G. COACHES, TRAINERS, MANAGERS ETC.) TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID?
If we have any reason to believe an athlete or coach may/does have Covid-19 then we immediately contact head athletic trainer Tracey Menges at which time she will provide recommendations as to how we should proceed.

HOW WILL WE BE ASSURED THAT THE OPPOSING TEAM/SCHOOL IS FOLLOWING THE SAFETY GUIDELINES?
As many as 172 athletic directors from across the state of Ohio meet through a zoom conference weekly to share best practices related to the safety measures that are being implemented.  This has been taking place for the past few months.  From what I have seen, the vast majority of schools have implemented very similar protocols based on the guidance that they have been provided by their respective local health professionals.

We know that current circumstances surrounding COVID - including rapidly changing conditions, misinformation and above all, the safety of our children, is creating anxiety for everyone. The LCS Athletic Department will continue to follow recommendations provided  by our state and local health professionals. Stay tuned to this page for updates as they occur.
