Reading First Summer School Program

Too many children struggle with learning to read. Reading failure can impose a tremendous long-term consequence for a child developing self-confidence and motivation to learn. We are seeking to provide children with early intervention to help them in their performance later on. We are focusing our efforts on the critical years of kindergarten through third grade by identifying methods that consistently relate to and support reading success.

Students who read below grade level or have tested low on Target Teach were recommended for this intensive summer school reading program. The program will focus on the five areas of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) plus the identified grade level indicators that students tested low district wide.

Summer school teachers will receive training from Harcourt using "First Place Reading," the summer school program. Students are invited to bring one parent to an informational picnic held at Lakeview Park on Wednesday, June 9. Invitation to this event is by ticket only.

Reading First Summer School will be held at three Reading First buildings: Washington, Lincoln and Larkmoor. Summer school is free and lunch and breakfast are not provided. Summer school begins June 10 and goes through June 30. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:25 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. daily. Students will receive incentives for every day they attend. Special perfect attendance prizes will be drawn weekly. Parents will receive feedback at the conclusion of the program.
