Secondary Assistance
Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) are available at both high schools for any student qualifying for the program. The program offers students an opportunity to earn college credit and high school credit at the same time. The requirements vary depending on the college or university selected. Lorain Community College, the usual partner for Lorain City Schools has a sliding scale for students.
It is:
- 12th Grade – 3.0 GPA
- 11th Grade – 3.5 GPA
- 10th Grade – 3.7 GPA
- 9th Grade – 3.9 GPA
In addition, the state requires that the student have at least a 3.0 GPA in the subject area of the course. The student must also take and pass the college qualifying test for the institution. This may be the ACT, SAT, or, in the case of LCCC, their ASSET and COMPASS tests. Students and parents should contact the high school’s counselor for more information.
Seniors to Sophomores is a new opportunity, started by Governor Strickland, to increase the options and credit earning potential for high school students. As the name implies, the program is open to 12th grade students and allows them to take up to 24 semester hours of college coursework during their senior year. In order to qualify for the program, a student must have
- Passed all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test
- Passed Algebra 2 with at least a C
- Achieved at least a C in each of their 3 years of English classes
- At least a 2.5 overall GPA
- Taken and passed the college entrance test for the institution
- Applied and been accepted by the college or university
Please contact your high school’s counselors for more information.
