Montessori programs are based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori who believed that young children could learn to read, write, and calculate by doing. Children learn at their own pace and according to their own interests, using the environment. They follow a definite plan using concrete materials, forming and reading written words, applying mathematical symbols and formulas, and understanding the concept of why and how. All tradtional subjects are integrated into the curriculum.

Goals

  • Increase student achievement through specially designed materials and equipment that allow children to work independently with a minimum of teacher direction
  • The Montessori Program will enable a child to: actively use a variety of materials, work with symbols, form/read written words, apply mathematical symbols/formulas, understand the concept of why/how, and participate as responsible citizens

Classroom Experiences

  • Reading and math are linked directly to the Montessori materials
  • Materials built on students interests
  • Learning areas provide for individual differences
  • Advanced equipment and materials permit students to progress at their own rate toward becoming independent learners
  • Multi-age groupings
