Digital Academy Beliefs

  • The digital academy will provide an alternate opportunity for students to meet their educational needs.
  • Technology is a tool that enhances learning and affords students choices in how to approach education.
  • All children can learn when given the opportunity and needed support.
  • By setting high expectations, our goal is for all students to reach higher levels of achievement.
  • All children learn at different rates and students should progress at their personal learning pace.

About Distance Learning

  • The digital academy uses a continuous progress model where students can accelerate their learning, get additional time on a specific course or skill. Students submit coursework, which is evaluated~ content area rubric to guarantee total mastery of the content.
  • All students may take specialized courses that would ordinarily not be available.
  • Since curriculum is available and schedules are more flexible, students can progress at a pace that is compatible with their learning styles.
  • The digital academy can meet the needs of a diverse population of students.
  • Students have a choice of attending on a traditional school calendar or may choose a custom calendar that allows the student to attend year round.

Distance Learning! Is Not For Everyone
Students Must be self-motivated.
Students are more responsible for their own learning.
Distance learning requires good time management skills.
Parental involvement is essential to the learning process.

Guiding Principles
The State of Ohio Standards will be used as the platform from which we align, assess and organize all units so students will be well prepared to pass all State of Ohio mandated tests. All learners will work to the same standards, but we recognize that not all learners acquire skills and knowledge at the same rate. Intervention strategies will be in place to identify students who are not progressing adequately and enrichment opportunities will be available to those students progressing at an accelerated pace.

Curriculum Overview
Thematic and organized lessons and activities are created around central ideas. Integrated subjects- topics are rarely presented in isolation in daily life, therefore, we believe that students can more readily make connections if course work is integrated (for example, language arts with social studies or math with science).

Regular and varied assessments will be provided so that teachers, students and parents can identify progress and needed intervention. Practical application activities will be provided in many units. User-friendly, exciting and engaging software applications will be incorporated into learning activities.

Parental Involvement
Parental involvement is key to success in this alternative educational setting. Two common ways for ongoing communications are (1) email between the parent and the digital teacher, and (2) using the computer to review student progress, grades on assignments, quizzes, papers, and tests. Our grade book system allows parents to access student grades and communicate with teachers through any Internet connected computer, any time day or night. Parents serve as an "Academic Coach". The parent will receive training on our system during the orientation session.
