H1N1 Flu Virus Guidelines for LCS
As we approach the flu season, we want you to be aware of the steps we are taking to prevent and limit the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has developed new guidelines that Lorain City Schools will follow to protect our children. To check out the guidelines go online to http://cdc.gov/h1n1flu/schools. The guidance is designed to decrease exposure to regular seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu while limiting the disruption of day-to-day activities and the vital learning that goes on in school. Unlike last school year, schools are not advised to automatically close school if a staff or student develops the H1N1 flu virus. Instead, Lorain City Schools will determine on a case-by-case basis whether or not to close school.
In an effort to limit school closure and prevent the spread of the flu, Lorain City Schools will encourage students and staff to wash their hands frequently and cover their mouths when coughing. In the event a student or staff member appears to have a flu-like illness during the school day, he or she will be promptly separated from others. Staff will be sent home immediately, and students will be cared for until a parent can take them home.
Parents, we need your help as well. You know your child best, so please be extra observant and cautious before sending him or her to school with achiness, cold symptoms, nausea, headache and/or joint pain. Following the CDC guidelines, students with flu-like symptoms must remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100° F or greater), or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications. Keeping students at home with flu-like symptoms reduces the risk of spreading the illness. |
