GEAR UP
Lorain City Schools is partnered with GEAR UP – Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, which is a national initiative, funded under the U.S. Department of Education, to encourage more young people to go to college. It is designed to accelerate the academic achievement of students so they are prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.
LCS GEAR UP Program currently serves approximately 1,400 students. For the next four years, GEAR UP will follow and support the classes of 2011 and 2012 promoting a college going culture and assisting them to make college a reality.
About Us
Each GEAR UP program provides the following Services:
Tutoring:
One-on-one and small group tutoring to reinforce and help students grasp challenging concepts presented in class and to prepare them to succeed on class exams and standardized tests.
Mentoring:
GEAR UP has partnered with area pastors, community leaders and other professionals to provide mentoring. GEAR UP mentors enrich and encourage our students to do well in high school, college and beyond.
College Awareness:
GEAR UP has college resource rooms in the schools for students to learn and request info about colleges and careers.
GEAR UP works with principals and teachers to deliver classroom presentations to inform and prepare students for life after high school.
College Visits
GEAR UP provides at least 1-2 opportunities per year for the Classes of 2011 and 2012 to visit a college campus. Students will have the opportunity to experience a college campus by touring the facilities, speaking to college staff and students and participating in an activity on campus.
Summer Enrichment
GEAR UP sponsors summer enrichment programs. This program provides students with additional academic assistance with challenging subjects and provides additional enrichment for our rising high school students.
